Schools is out and the lazy flip flops days of summer have arrived. Each year, I greet the beginning of June with a mix of anticipation and dread. Adjusting to the summer months of no routine is a difficult one for me and for my children. Several years ago, I started a simple idea to give each week of our summer a theme. We tried to make crafts, eat foods, go on outings with that theme in mind. Those summer theme weeks were amazing! They helped to fill the days with something other than pool time and whining. The constant “I’m bored” was replaced with a challenge to the older kids to find activities around the house that fit with our theme. Last year, we decided to truly embrace the summer and have no schedule at all. EPIC FAIL!!! The summer seemed to drag on, fights and tears and time outs were plentiful. When August came and the school bus pulled around the corner, I was sad for all of the fun we did not have.
For the summer of 2016, theme weeks have made their triumphant return. I’ll be sharing my plan for each week on Sunday evening. I hope you will find something in each week that your kiddos may enjoying doing. I would LOVE to hear any suggestions for activities or themes that you have found. I’ll be using the hashtag #smallstepssummer on Instagram to post pictures of our summer adventures so follow along!
