In my ongoing quest to dial in my nutrition, I have started to closely examine sugar and it’s role in our family meal plan. I LOVE ice cream, my oldest son’s favorite food group is candy, dessert is a regular occurrence in our home.  So I went looking for a natural alternative to help ease our sweet tooth. Dates were just the answer!

For most of my life, I had NO idea where dates came from, what they tasted like or why anyone would eat them. I ranked them up there with prunes, something “old folks” ate. Until one day I flipped over a Larabar. First ingredient? Dates!  The next time I was in the grocery store, I picked up a package of pitted dates to see what I could do with them. And if I could get the kids to try one! Here are several recipes that have proven to almost as good as my nightly bowl of ice cream.

Pecan Butter Chocolate Truffles from Eat Slow, Run Fast

Dates are uses as the binding for these delicious truffles. My kids DEVOURED these!

Dates can also be used to satisfy that sweet/salty combo we often crave!

I am learning to become more aware of sugar “sneaking” onto our plates.  Pasta sauce, ketchup, dressings are usually packed with sugar. After making this homemade ketchup recipe, we may never have Heinz again.

As a quick snack, a pitted date sliced open with all natural peanut butter is amazing!
